SADF Extended Holster

Last month we looked at an SADF 1970 pattern holster. That version had space for the pistol and a single magazine of spare ammunition. A second pattern of holster was also issued, however, that had a pocket to carry additional rounds to allow the magazines to be refilled:

The difference between this holster and the smaller one is the top pouch, which is rectangular in shape with a triangular top flap:

The flap is secured by a single pebbled press stud, opening it gives access to the ammunition pocket:

Unfortunately I don’t have a Star pistol to display with the holster, but my Browning is a reasonable substitute for the purpose of this article:

The same pocket is fitted to the front for the magazine, with a channel for a cleaning rod:

On the rear are a pair of belt loops and a single male press stud that prevents the holster from sliding on the belt:

The two holsters side by side show the similarities between the two patterns. It is interesting to note the different shapes of the base of the two holsters, despite their obvious similarities in other respects:

  1. I was issued a pistol for many years and always figured that if that was your personal weapon and you needed to change magazines under fire, even once, then there should be some rifles or smg’s lying around and you’d be better off with one of those. 😉
