South African Police Holster

The South African Police sourced its own equipment and uniforms, but despite being to unique patterns there was a clear familial resemblance to those items issued to the army. The South African Police issued its personnel with the Walther P38 pistol before switching over to the Z88 pistol, both small 9mm models. These pistols were issued in blue webbing holsters that were to a distinct pattern, but were clearly manufactured by the same companies as the nutria brown webbing issued to the SADF:

As I do not have either of the SAP issued pistols, here a Browning Hi-Power is used to illustrate the holster. The holster is small and just holds the pistol, with a strap to secure the pistol passing over its back strap and securing with a single press stud:

Note how the press stud is the same grey-green pebbled design used by the SADF. A spare magazine is carried in a small pocket on the front of the holster and again a tab and a press stud is used to hold this in place:

It is interesting to note the construction of the webbing tabs which are folded over and secured with a couple of stitches to prevent the webbing from fraying:

The rear of the holster is very simple, with just a belt loop to allow the holster to be slid onto the belt and worn on the hip:

Here a group of police officers can be seen wearing the holsters in the early 1990s:
